Rusdi Kirana and Kusnan Kirana founded Thai Lion Airline in October 1999. On June 30, 2000, it began operations when it started scheduled passenger service from Jakarta to Denpasar, Pontianak, and Pontianak with a leased Boeing 737-220. It was Indonesia’s first low-cost airline. With the addition of five Yakovlev Yak-42Ds and two McDonnell Douglas MD-82s to the fleet, it was quickly expanded. Modernization of the fleet was possible thanks to rapid growth, including Boeing 737-3300 and Boeing 737-405 aircraft. Wings Air was established in 2003 as a subsidiary airline, which operated flights on low-density routes.

Malindo Air was established in Malaysia in 2012 and Thai Lion Air in Thailand, respectively. In 2013 domestically, Batik Air was created, which is a full-service subsidiary. The airline plans to join the International Air Transport Association and is hoping to be the second IATA Indonesian member after Garuda Indonesia. Lion Air was unable to pass the first IATA membership assessments in 2011. Boeing and Lion Air pioneered navigation performance (RNP), having performed validation flights at two terrain-challenged Indonesian airports, Manado and Ambon. Lion Air grounded 13 aircraft in July 2011 due to bad on-time performance (OTP) sanctions.

PT Lion Mentari Airlines is an Indonesian low-cost airline. Lion Air, based in Jakarta, is the country’s biggest privately-owned airline.
