Himalaya Airlines
Himalaya Airlines is Yeti Airlines Group’s second attempt to establish an international airline in Nepal. This follows the 2008 collapse of Fly Yeti. Flying Dragon Airlines is the second Sino-Nepali airline company. Initially, Tibet Airlines and The Himalaya Infrastructure Fund held stakes in the airline and Yeti World Investment (an affiliate of Yeti Airlines Group). Himalaya Airlines leased an aircraft from Yeti Airlines to get its certificate as an air operator. It conducted its first proving flight in February 2015. The April 2015 earthquake in Nepal delayed the launch plans.
Airbus A320 was the airline’s first aircraft. It was inducted on March 9, 2016. Himalaya Airlines began operations in May 2016 with flights between Kathmandu, Doha, and other destinations. The flights from Kathmandu to Colombo started in October. This marked the return of scheduled flights between Nepalese and Sri Lanka after 28 years of absence. However, the flights were quickly suspended. Himalaya Airlines was the governmental aircraft for Nepal in 2016, when Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli visited China. The public was outraged that the head of the Nepalese government did not use state-owned airlines.
