Overview of Gulf Air
British pilot and entrepreneur Freddie Bosworth started an air taxi service from Bahrain to Doha and Dhahran in the late 1940s. Bosworth expanded the service later and registered Gulf Aviation Company Limited on 24 March 1950 as a private shareholder company. Gulf Air, the current operating company, is one of the oldest carriers from the Middle East. Seven Avro Ansons and three de Havilland DH.86B quad-engine biplanes were part of the early fleet.
British Overseas Airways Corporation was a significant shareholder of Gulf Aviation in October 1951. They held a 22% share through BOAC Associated Companies, a BOAC subsidiary. This flight saw a rise in air travel and growth during the 1980s. 1981. It was an IATA member and became the first international airline that landed in Riyadh in 1981. The first national carrier in Dubai, Emirates, was established in 1985. In their first year of operation, Gulf Air lost 30%. This forced the airline to abandon its privatization plans. Gulf Air suffered a loss in 1986.
