Overview of British Airways
Proposals for a British Overseas Airways Corporation-owned airline. British European Airways was established for the first time in 1953 after difficulties with negotiations by BOAC/BEA. The British colony of Cyprus has rights to air travel. BOAC was increasingly protesting BEA’s use of its subsidiary Cyprus Airways to bypass an agreement that BEA would not fly further east than Cyprus. Particularly about the growing importance of oil regions in the Middle East. Miles Thomas, the chairman of BOAC, was supportive of a merger to resolve this dispute.
Rab Butler, the then Chancellor of Exchequer, had supported the idea. The Treasury opposed the proposal. The 1969 Edwards Report recommended that the British Airways Board be established. The new British Airways Board managed BOAC and BEA. The board also oversees the British regional airlines Cambrian Airways, based in Cardiff, and Northeast Airlines, based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Each airline’s branding was kept intact at first, but the British Airways Board unified its branding two years later. British Airways was officially established as an airline on 31/03/74.
